Effective steps required to promote milk production: CM

DEHRADUN, 16 Jan: Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said today that there was need for effective efforts to promote milk production in the state. Animal husbandry and milk production could be key factors in the strengthening of the rural economy and the economic self-reliance of women. He also underlined the need for consolidated efforts in this direction.
He said this while reviewing the Milk Price Incentive Scheme at his official residence late on Tuesday. He said that in the financial year, an amount of Rs 10 crores had been provided to the milk producers under the Milk Price Incentive Scheme. In order to provide strong support to the milk distribution system, efforts also had to be made to ensure its supply in Anganwadi Centres. He said that in order to avoid adulteration of milk and milk related products, Food Safety Department should examine it. He said that farmers should be encouraged to promote milk production in hill areas. He also talked about taking an initiative by making a group of farmers to facilitate them.
While obtaining information about milk production and consumption, the Chief Minister added that, in this direction, the cooperatives should also be made associates. If there was better performance of the state in the milk production and cooperative sector, it would help in getting financial assistance from the National Dairy Federation as well.
Secretary, Milk Development, R Meenakshi Sundaram said that during the launch of the scheme, about 1,41,731 litres of milk was being procured daily from about 50,000 milk producers daily. Now about 1,91,878 litres of milk were being procured from about 52,000 milk producers. This had increased milk production by 35 per cent.
On the occasion, Minister of State for Cooperatives Dr Dhan Singh Rawat, Chief Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Radha Raturi, Additional Secretary Dr Meharban Singh Bisht, Director, Dairy, Prakash Chandra Arya, General Manager, NABARD, AK Srivastava, etc., were present.
