Roorkee, 6 Feb: Chief Minister BC Khanduri has taken an extremely serious view of the mishap involving collapse of an under–construction foot–bridge in Roorkee on Saturday last, and sought detailed information on the incident from the Principal Secretary, Public Works Department, and the Chief Engineer, PWD.
Khanduri, who conducted an on-the-spot inspection of the mishap site on Monday, also took along with him the two officials. At the directions of the Chief Minister, the Head of Civil Engineering Department at IIT Roorkee, Prof AK Jain, Officiating District Magistrate HC Semwal, and senior officials of the PWD and IIT Roorkee, also remained present at the site. At the site, Khanduri examined the damaged foundation of the vertical truss columns erected on both sides of the bridge, and also held detailed discussions with technical experts regarding the damaged bridge structure.
At the site, the Chief Minister ordered that technical investigations by experts from IIT Roorkee be also carried out along with the Magisterial Enquiry being conducted in compliance with the earlier directions given to the Principal Secretary and the Chief Engineer, PWD. Besides, he also directed the Principal Secretary to present a report on the incident without delay and fix responsibility and accountability of the officials, as well as initiate stern administrative and legal action against those officials and employees found guilty.
The Chief Minister also announced interim assistance of Rs 1 lakh, each, to the next of kin of the three labourers who are still missing as a result of the bridge collapse.
Chief Minister Khanduri also directed that the Executive Engineer, the Assistant Engineer and the Junior Engineer associated with the Public Works Department (PWD) who were looking after the bridge construction work be attached to the headquarters with immediate effect till further orders.
