By Our Staff Reporter
Dehradun, 9 Jun: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a worldwide, a non-denomination and apolitical fellowship was established in Akron, Ohio, in US in the year 1935. AA fellowship is at present available in over 190 countries, with an estimate membership of 2.5 million. It all started when a New York based stock analyst Bill W, an ex-drunk met Dr Bob, a practicing alcoholic. Dr Bob had his last drink on 10th June 1935 and remained bone dry sober till his death. As such it is considered to be the Founders day of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the miracle of AA continues till date even after the lapse of 88 years since then.
AA came to India in the year 1957, when the message of recovery propounded by AAe’s 12 steps was carried by a Canadian working in the American embassy, at New Delhi, to a Bombay based school teacher called Harry M. From there it spread to various places all over India. The estimated membership in India is about forty thousand.
AA was launched in Dehradun in the year 1998 on 8th July and it is presently in the 25th year of its existence. AA holds regular weekly meetings in Dehradun and nearby areas such as, Bhowali, Bheemtal in Kumaon and nearby Rishikesh, Haridawar and Roorkee etc in Garhwal, as also in nearby Saharanpur.
The primary purpose of any AA group anywhere is to help its members to attain and maintain sobriety and to reach out to other suffering alcoholics. There are no dues or fees for AA membership. AA is self supporting through the voluntary contributions of its members. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. AA has no opinion on outside issues and steers away from any controversy and neither endorses not opposes any causes.
