Seminar on Cancer Awareness & Prevention held at Raj Bhavan

DEHRADUN, 3 Nov: A seminar on cancer awareness and prevention was organised at the Raj Bhavan by Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Medical Education University. Subject experts presented their views on cancer prevention and awareness on the occasion.
Director, Subharti Cancer Management Institute, Meerut, Dr Anurag Srivastava shared important information on breast cancer. He said that treatment of any type of cancer is possible if it is detected early. Due to low awareness, cancer is not detected in the early stages. He said that breast cancer in women is more fatal at the age of 30 to 40 years. He described the symptoms of breast cancer and the methods developed to diagnose and treat it.
Dr Amit Sherawat of AIIMS Rishikesh provided information to the people present about lung cancer. He said that smoking is the cause of more than 80 percent of lung cancer. Dr Sweety Gupta and Prof of AIIMS Rishikesh Shalini Rajaram also shared their views about the symptoms related to cancer, its fatal consequences and measures to avoid it.
Participating in this seminar as the Chief Guest, Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) said it is important for every person to be aware of their health. He said that cancer as a major health problem is affecting millions of people and having a very fatal impact on the lives of people. He said that efforts should be made to create awareness among people in remote areas about a deadly disease like cancer and the harm caused by it.
The Governor added that among the measures to prevent cancer, it is important to properly maintain one’s lifestyle and have a balanced diet. He said people remain careless about this deadly disease in the initial stage and when it becomes severe, people go in search of treatment but by then it is often too late. In such a situation, it is important to become aware of its deadly tendency, symptoms, causes and diagnosis. He said that many measures had been suggested by experts in the seminar which everyone should implement.
Governor Singh expressed confidence that the ideas and brainstorming done at the seminar would increase awareness about this disease and its diagnosis. He emphasised on the use of mass media for awareness so that people can become aware of the symptoms and causes of this disease.
Special Guest, Secretary to the Governor, Ravinath Raman said that the inspiration to organise this seminar by the University was given by the Governor. Under the guidance of the Governor, health-related seminars are being organised from time to time at Raj Bhavan. For a deadly disease like cancer, one must make changes in one’s lifestyle which can protect one from these dangers.
