DEHRADUN, 6 Feb: The doctors of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital have successfully carried out an operation and given a new lease of life to a critically ill woman, suffering from a giant tumour. She is now healthy and has been discharged from hospital.
Sita Devi (35), a resident of Village Mandoli, Block Dewal, District Chamoli, was complaining of a swelling in the abdomen. She reached Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital for treatment. Dr Vivek Vijjan, Urologist (MCh) diagnosed a tumour of a rare large size in her kidney. If the operation had been conducted in the normal manner, there would have been extensive bleeding, resulting in the removal of the kidney along with the tumour. Interventional Radiologist of Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital Dr Prashant Sarda occluded the vessels supplying blood to the tumour by Angio Embolisation method. After this, Dr Vivek Vijjan, Dr Vimal Kumar Dixit and their team removed the tumour from the kidney in an operation that lasted 4 hours without any bleeding. Besides this, a significant achievement was that the kidney of the patient was also saved.
Dr. Vivek Vijjan disclosed that the tumour (Angiomyolipoma) removed is of 20 centimetres size, twice that of the kidney. Such a big tumour is called Giant Angiomyolipoma and is very rare. These have a very high propensity to bleed and such haemorrhage is potentially life threatening. After the operation, the patient is now healthy and has been discharged from the hospital. The team carrying out the operation consisted of Dr Vivek Vijjan, Dr. Vimal Kumar Dixit and Anaesthesia Department’s Dr Anoop Negi.
