Dehradun, 11 Feb: The murder of 40-year-old gas agency operator Arjun Sharma near the busy Tibetan Market today has triggered sharp criticism from the Congress party, which has accused the government of failing to maintain law and order in Uttarakhand. Speaking informally with media persons at his office today, PCC Chief Ganesh Godiyal launched a scathing attack on the administration, declaring that the state’s policing system has collapsed and is now serving the political and personal interests of ministers rather than the public.
Speaking at the party headquarters, Godiyal alleged that the police are engaged in safeguarding the ruling party’s agenda and catering to the private interests of those in power. He recalled that when Congress had earlier raised concerns about the deteriorating law and order situation in Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, and Dehradun, the CM should have responded with seriousness and constructive measures. Godiyal alleged that instead of focussing on improving law and order, the government has attempted to divert attention by entangling the opposition in irrelevant debates.
Godiyal further charged that the government has ignored the real issues for which it was elected, choosing instead to distract citizens with rhetoric around demographic change, love jihad, and land jihad. He asserted that the police, whose duty is to protect the interests of ordinary citizens, are being misused by politicians for their own gains, leading to the collapse of law and order across the state.
The PCC Chief warned that the government must awaken before it is too late and if it fails to do so, the people themselves must rise. Stressing that police commitment should be towards the public and not towards political leaders, Godiyal blamed the inefficiency of senior police officers for the rising toll of innocent lives. He said that the deaths of ordinary citizens are a direct consequence of officers abandoning their integrity and responsibility, and such officials have no justification to remain in their posts.
