Dehradun, 30 Apr: As had been predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), sudden and sharp change in weather brought significant relief from the recent heatwave across Uttarakhand today. The capital city of Dehradun witnessed widespread rainfall accompanied by gusty winds this afternoon, while several hill districts reported intense showers and hailstorms. The development assumes significance as Dehradun had recorded unusually high temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius earlier this week, prompting heatwave alerts and even temporary closure of schools in the district. Mussoorie too witnessed strong rains today, bringing chill in the hill station.

The IMD’s forecast has proven to be accurate as rain activity picked up across Dehradun and adjoining areas post noon, leading to a noticeable drop in temperature and a marked improvement in weather conditions. The change was accompanied by strong winds and intermittent spells of heavy rain, bringing the city out of an extended period of oppressive heat. According to official forecasts, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph were expected across the state, including Dehradun, under the influence of an active western disturbance.

The impact of the weather shift was not limited to the capital alone. Districts such as Tehri, Nainital, Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh also witnessed rainfall and, in several places, hailstorms. An orange alert had already been issued for many of these districts, warning of heavy rain, hail and strong winds. In Dehradun and nearby foothill regions, rainfall brought down temperatures sharply, while in the hills, especially Mussoorie and surrounding areas, hail accumulation created wintry visuals, briefly altering the seasonal character.

The sudden weather transition has been widely welcomed in Dehradun, where residents had been grappling with intense heat conditions over the past week. The rainfall not only brought down temperatures but also improved overall comfort levels, with cool winds prevailing across the Doon valley through the evening. However, authorities have urged caution, noting that such abrupt weather changes can also pose risks, particularly in vulnerable areas prone to waterlogging, falling debris and reduced visibility.

Across the state, the rainfall has had mixed implications. While it has provided relief from heat, it has also triggered concerns among the farmers, particularly in hill districts where hailstorms were reported. Cultivators have expressed apprehension that standing crops, especially fruits and vegetables, may suffer damage due to the intensity of the hail. In regions like Nainital and parts of Kumaon, horticulture-based livelihoods are particularly vulnerable during such unseasonal weather events.

At the same time, the rainfall has come as a relief for the Forest Department, especially in districts like Tehri and Pauri and in Pithoragarh, where incidents of forest fires had been reported in recent days. The showers have helped in containing fires to a considerable extent, reducing the immediate threat to forest resources and wildlife. Historically, rainfall at this time of year has often played a crucial role in checking the spread of forest fires in the region.

The Meteorological Department has indicated that the current spell of unstable weather is likely to persist over the next few days, with continued chances of rain and thunderstorms across several districts, including Dehradun.
