MoU signed between IISWC & Spring River Rejuvenation Authority for Kamal Ganga River

Dehradun, 4 Jun: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 3 June between the ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (IISWC) and Spring and River Rejuvenation Authority (SARRA), Watershed Management Directorate, Government of Uttarakhand, for undertaking a consultancy project, titled “Prioritisation and Rejuvenation Planning of Selected Rivers (River Kamal Ganga, Purola)” under the One District–One River initiative of SARRA.The project aims to develop a comprehensive scientific framework for the rejuvenation of River Kamal Ganga in Purola Block of Uttarkashi district. The study will focus on identifying critical degradation hotspots, assessing watershed characteristics, evaluating hydrological and ecological conditions, and preparing a detailed river rejuvenation plan to improve river health, water availability, and ecosystem services.

Under the consultancy assignment, IISWC will undertake detailed field investigations and watershed assessments to prioritise interventions for river restoration and sustainable water resource management.

Officials from SARRA highlighted that the One District–One River initiative seeks to restore and conserve important rivers across Uttarakhand through scientific planning, community participation, and integrated watershed management. The rejuvenation of River Kamal Ganga is expected to serve as a model for sustainable river restoration efforts in the state.

Representatives of IISWC expressed their commitment to providing technical expertise and evidence-based recommendations for the successful implementation of the project. The collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the conservation of water resources, ecological restoration, and sustainable livelihoods in the region.

The MoU marks an important step towards strengthening institutional collaboration for river conservation and achieving the broader objectives of watershed management and environmental sustainability in Uttarakhand.
