Garhwal Post Bureau
Dehradun, 19 Jul: Inspired by the vision of Chief Minister Dhami, a high-level delegation recently undertook an extensive study tour to Nepal—the world’s leading producer of Rudraksha—to explore the prospects of introducing large-scale commercial Rudraksha cultivation in Uttarakhand. The delegation was led by the MLA from Tehri Garhwal, Kishore Upadhyay, and included renowned Rudraksha expert Prince Agrawal and Dr Ramesh Singh Pal, Senior Agricultural Scientist and noted spiritual author. The primary objective of the visit was to study Nepal’s advanced Rudraksha cultivation practices, crop management techniques, post-harvest processing systems, marketing mechanisms, soil characteristics, and the feasibility of commercial cultivation in suitable regions of Uttarakhand.

During the study, soil samples were collected from major Rudraksha-growing regions of Nepal and analysed in the laboratory. Comparative soil analyses were subsequently conducted using samples collected from several locations in Garhwal, including Tehri Garhwal, Narendra Nagar, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun. The findings revealed that the soil characteristics of several areas in Garhwal closely resemble those of Nepal’s Rudraksha-producing regions, indicating strong agro-climatic suitability for commercial Rudraksha cultivation in Uttarakhand.
Sharing the key findings of the study, senior agricultural scientist Dr Ramesh Singh Pal stated that Uttarakhand possesses exceptional potential for developing a robust and sustainable Rudraksha-based ecosystem capable of generating significant economic, environmental, and spiritual benefits. At present, the majority of Rudraksha available in India and China is imported from Nepal and Indonesia, with India’s annual imports amounting to several hundred crores of rupees.
The delegation has prepared a comprehensive “200-page technical report” titled “Possibilities of Rudraksha Cultivation in Uttarakhand and a Comprehensive Strategic Action Plan for the Development and Expansion of Rudraksha Cultivation in the State”. The report was formally submitted to the Chief Minister on 9 July. The proposed initiative aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported Rudraksha, generate sustainable and high-income livelihood opportunities for farmers in the Himalayan region, promote spiritual tourism and the wellness industry, and establish Uttarakhand as the Global Himalayan Rudraksha Hub.
The Chief Minister appreciated the efforts of Kishore Upadhyay, Prince Agrawal, and Dr Ramesh Singh Pal for undertaking this initiative. He stated that the State Government would soon formulate a comprehensive strategic plan for the development and expansion of Rudraksha cultivation in Uttarakhand and direct the Forest Department, district administration, and agricultural scientists to implement the programme on the ground.
The Chief Minister further expressed confidence that a Rudraksha-based local wealth creation model could provide a practical, sustainable, and effective solution to the long-standing problem of migration from the hill regions. He emphasised that the initiative would also make a significant contribution to strengthening Uttarakhand’s economy, promoting environmental conservation, and preserving its rich spiritual heritage.
