Mussoorie, 2 Aug: Chaos ensued on Sunday at New Market, located on the bustling Mall Road, when an out-of-control jeep suddenly skidded off the road and crashed straight into a restaurant. Goods worth lakhs of rupees inside the restaurant were damaged in the incident. Fortunately, customers and staff managed to escape in time, averting a major tragedy.
According to eyewitnesses, the jeep driver had parked the vehicle by the roadside and was unloading goods. Meanwhile, a teenager sitting inside the vehicle inadvertently tampered with the handbrake (or gear). The jeep suddenly lurched forward; before anyone could react, the vehicle rolled rapidly and crashed directly into the restaurant situated opposite.
A loud crash was heard as the jeep entered the restaurant, causing panic among the people present. Customers and staff inside scrambled to get out and save their lives. Within moments, nearby shopkeepers and passersby gathered at the scene.
The restaurant’s glass, furniture, counter, electronic appliances, and other items were severely damaged in the accident. Preliminary estimates suggest losses amounting to lakhs of rupees. Following the incident, a large crowd gathered in the New Market area, and traffic flow was disrupted for some time.
Eyewitnesses remarked that had the restaurant been more crowded or had the people inside failed to exit in time, the accident could have claimed multiple lives.
