Letter to the Editor

Sir,                                                                                                                             It is gathered from various local newspapers that, during the monsoon season, residents are invariably subjected to several perennial civic problems, including damaged roads, waterlogged footpaths, potholes, open drains, accumulation of garbage, and inadequate pedestrian pathways. Unfortunately, many of these problems are being faced by the residents of Dalanwala too.                                                                                                                                              I would, however, like to draw the attention of residents and institutions located in Dalanwala to yet another issue that deserves consideration. The roads in this historic area, many of which were laid during the British period, are already narrow, and several stretches have little or no provision for safe pedestrian movement.

The boundary walls along roads in areas such as Laxmi Road, Pritam Road, Mohini Road, Inder Road, Nemi Road, Curzon Road and Circular Road often reflect the residents’ admirable love for gardening and greenery. However, trees, climbers such as bougainvillea, and other plants frequently grow beyond the boundary walls and extend onto the roads and pedestrian spaces.

While we should certainly continue to love, respect and protect nature, it is equally important that such vegetation is regularly pruned and trimmed, particularly before and during the monsoon. Vegetation grows considerably faster during this season, and unchecked growth can gradually obstruct roads and pedestrian movement.

Regular pruning would offer several benefits. It would make the roads appear wider, keep overgrown plants under control, improve the overall appearance of the neighbourhood, and facilitate the removal of dead, weak or excessively long branches. Most importantly, it would help maintain clear visibility for motorists and pedestrians, thereby contributing to greater safety.

I therefore make a humble appeal to all residents, institutions and property owners in Dalanwala to take appropriate and timely action to trim vegetation extending beyond their boundary walls. This small but responsible effort would help us preserve the greenery and charm of Dalanwala while also making its roads safer, cleaner and more accessible for everyone.

Yours etc.,

Dr Surjeet Singh Khaira
