Mussoorie, 2 Oct: Thanks to a series of holidays and the weekend, Mussoorie is bustling with tourists. The tourism sector is thriving with the lively presence of visitors at hotels, markets, and tourist spots; however, the massive influx of tourist vehicles has put the city’s traffic system to the test. A traffic jam stretching several kilometres at ‘Pani Wala Bend’ on the Mussoorie-Dehradun route caused hours of inconvenience for both tourists and locals. Long queues of vehicles also formed at the city’s main intersections. The congestion delayed tourists in reaching their destinations and disrupted the daily routines of local residents. Police personnel were seen managing traffic at key routes and intersections, yet the constantly mounting volume of vehicles remained a challenge. The slow movement of traffic at ‘Pani Wala Bend’ caused a ripple effect, with its impact felt deep within the city.
While the influx of tourists during holidays boosts Mussoorie’s tourism economy, the rising volume of vehicles exposes the limitations of the road and parking infrastructure. Locals point out that parking facilities have not kept pace with the growing number of tourists. Due to the lack of adequate parking, vehicles are often parked along the roadside, further increasing traffic congestion. Residents have demanded a robust traffic management plan and the development of large-scale parking facilities, especially for the peak tourist season and weekends. They believe that organised parking and effective traffic management would ensure a smoother journey for tourists and provide locals with relief from frequent traffic jams.
