Dehradun, 13 Oct: HimValley Social Foundation, with the support of Survey of India, organised the State Finals of its Map Quiz today. Students from schools in Dehradun and several other districts took part. The quiz was held in three categories: Senior, Junior and Sub-Junior.
Anita Nautiyal, Founder and President of HimValley Social Foundation, has organised the Map Quiz for many years. Its aim is to build awareness among young people about maps, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geography.
SK Sinha, Surveyor General of India, attended as Chief Guest. Senior Survey of India officials Pardeep Singh and Upkar Pathak also took part.
Mahavir Mina, Superintending Surveyor, Survey of India, gave students a presentation on the basics of surveying, mapping, GIS and map reading.
The competition had two parts. The first was a quiz on these topics. The second was a navigation skill test, in which students used a map to find and identify features on the ground.
The event gave students practical exposure to mapping and spatial skills, and it continues the Foundation’s long-running effort to promote geographic literacy in the state.
