Sushil Kumar appointed State Election Commissioner

Dehradun, 29 Aug: Retired IAS officer of Uttarakhand cadre, Sushil Kumar has been appointed the new State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Uttarakhand. The post of State Election Commissioner had been lying vacant for some time after the retirement of Chandra Shekhar Bhatt.

Kumar is a 2005 batch IAS officer. He was a PCS Officer before being promoted to the IAS cadre and was allotted the 2005 batch. Kumar had retired from the post of Garhwal Commissioner last year.

The State Election Commissioner has the authority to declare and conduct the Panchayati bodies and urban local bodies election, which do not fall under the purview of Election Commission of India. A new appointment on this post was being awaited in view of the upcoming Municipal elections and the Panchayat elections. The orders appointing Sushil Kumar were issued today.

A graduate in science from Kurukshetra University and MBA from IP University, New Delhi, Kumar also served as a Commissioned Officer in the Corps of Engineers in the Indian Army before joining the state civil service in undivided UP.

During his service as a civil servant, he has handled various prestigious and challenging assignments and responsibilities as Municipal Commissioner in Dehradun, as District Magistrate in Pithoragarh and District Magistrate in Pauri Garhwal. He has also served in various line departments as Labour Commissioner and Sugarcane Commissioner in the state and also as Excise Commissioner. Besides serving as Commissioner, Garhwal, Kumar has also served the state as Secretary in the Department of Revenue, and as Secretary, Food & Civil Supplies. He is also known for incorporating various reforms related to automation and real time management of supply chain in food grain distribution. He also introduced the e-procurement system and launched electronic distribution system in collaboration with CSC-SPV of Government of India.
