Dehradun, 12 Dec: The much-anticipated Supreme Court hearing of the Haldwani railway land case, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed. According to reports, the case could not be listed for today’s proceedings, resulting in a delay until a new date is announced.

The Government of Uttarakhand and the Government of India are expected to present a joint stance before the court in this case. On 24 July this year, the Supreme Court had issued an interim order directing the Central Government, State Government, and Railways to prepare a comprehensive joint plan, which was to be submitted by 27 November this year.  According to the sources in the state government, this joint plan has been submitted to the Court. However, the hearing was deferred due to unforeseen reasons.

The hearing was initially expected to take place today. The case was not listed for today’s hearing and the next hearing date has also not been fixed or announced so far. The delay has drawn significant attention, as the case holds critical implications for the residents of Haldwani and the state of Uttarakhand.

It may be recalled that a large area of railway land has allegedly been encroached upon by people, belonging mostly to the members of a particular community. The Uttarakhand High Court had in the wake of the direction of the Supreme Court to get all the railways land vacated across the country, directed the eviction of the encroachers. However, the Supreme Court despite its own past judgement on similar lines had stayed the eviction of the encroachers and has in fact directed an alternative rehabilitation plan to resettle those to be evicted from the railway property. The Haldwani railway land case remains a pivotal matter, with citizens eagerly awaiting the court’s decision, which could potentially shape the region’s future.
