Dehradun, 4 Jun: In a significant step towards sustainable development and environmental conservation, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Construction Division of the Public Works Department (PWD). Under the agreement, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) will supply plastic waste to the PWD for use in road construction works in the city and elsewhere.

The initiative, launched on the eve of World Environment Day, aims to support the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the National Clean Air Programme by reducing plastic pollution and promoting eco-friendly practices. The initial target is to provide approximately 800 metric tonnes of processed plastic waste. This move will also serve as a source of revenue for the Nagar Nigam.

The MoU signing ceremony was held in the presence of Mayor Saurabh Thapliyal, who lauded the collaboration as a forward-looking solution to the dual challenges of plastic waste management and infrastructure development.

To further bolster this campaign, the Municipal Corporation will observe 5 June, World Environment Day, as “No Plastic Day”. On this occasion, plastic waste will be collected from homes, institutions, and commercial establishments across Dehradun using municipal vehicles. The collected plastic will be processed and then transferred to the Public Works Department for integration into road-laying materials.
