New Delhi, 2 Dec: Uttarakhand has achieved significant progress in two major social welfare schemes, with 70 per cent of its housing target completed under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Urban) and more than 8.9 lakh people enrolled under the Atal Pension Yojana according to the Centre. This, the government has claimed will ensure future social security for a large section of the population. The information was revealed in the Rajya Sabha in response to questions raised by State BJP President and MP Mahendra Bhatt.

In response to a written unstarred question by Bhatt, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, informed the House that the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Urban), launched on 25 June 2015, aims to provide all-weather pucca houses equipped with basic civic amenities to eligible urban beneficiaries across the country. The scheme has been extended until 31 December 2025 without any change in its funding pattern or implementation methodology, ensuring completion of sanctioned houses. Based on proposals submitted by Uttarakhand, the Ministry has sanctioned 66,341 houses under PMAY-U, including 2,736 under PMAY-U 2.0. Of these, 45,124 houses have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries as of 24 November 2025. During the current financial year, 2,736 houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-U 2.0, and central assistance amounting to Rs 69.21 crore has been released to the State.

In a separate reply to Unstarred Question No. 253, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary shared information regarding the progress of the Atal Pension Yojana, which was launched on 9 May 2015 to create a comprehensive social security system for citizens, particularly those from poor and unorganised sectors. The scheme is open to all Indian citizens aged between 18 and 40 years who hold a savings bank account with a bank or post office. Subscribers are entitled to pension benefits upon attaining 60 years of age, with benefits expected to commence from 2035. As of 31 October 2025, Uttarakhand has enrolled 8,91,202 people under the scheme, including a substantial number from the unorganised workforce.

The twin achievements reflect Uttarakhand’s steady progress in implementing central welfare schemes aimed at improving housing infrastructure and securing the future of its citizens. With the housing scheme extended until 2025 and pension benefits scheduled to begin in 2035, the State is expected to further consolidate gains in social welfare and strengthen its commitment to inclusive development.
