Dehradun, 15 Oct: Doon University has initiated the appointment of “Professor of Practice” under the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). As part of this initiative, the University has appointed Dr Thomas Schwab, Senior Principal Scientist at BASF Germany, as a “Professor of Practice”. On Wednesday, Dr Schwab, accompanied by Vice Chancellor Prof Surekha Dangwal, called on the Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) in this regard.

Dr Thomas Schwab also serves as an Honorary Professor at the University of St Andrews, Scotland—one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious educational institutions, established nearly 700 years ago. BASF Germany, a 150-year-old leading global chemical company, employs over 10,000 scientists engaged in research activities.

The Governor said that this initiative, in line with UGC guidelines, reflects Doon University’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. He remarked that such distinguished experts, who have made remarkable contributions in their respective fields, truly deserve to be called “Professors of Best Practice”. The Governor also sought insights from Dr Schwab regarding ongoing industrial research at BASF Germany and appreciated his scientific contributions.

The Governor further stated that other universities should also take the initiative to connect renowned experts and professionals from industry, research and development sectors as “Professors of Practice”, without compromising on quality and standards, to ensure effective synergy between academia and industry.

Vice Chancellor Prof Surekha Dangwal stated that, in accordance with the Governor’s suggestions, Doon University has appointed Dr Schwab as “Professor of Practice” on an honorary basis, which places no financial burden on the university. She also noted that Dr Schwab has borne all expenses of his international travel himself.

Dr Arun Kumar, Dean of the School of Physical Sciences and Director of the Research and Development Cell, stated that Dr Schwab is actively working with university students and faculty members, contributing significantly to strengthening the quality of scientific research.

Also present on the occasion were Dr Himani Sharma, Dr Asha Ram Gairola, Dr Vikas Sharma and Dr Charu Dwivedi.
