India undergoing transformation in Defence Modernisation: Gov

Vijay Diwas: HQs U’khand Sub Area holds Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Shaurya Sthal

Dehradun, 16 Dec: On the occasion of Vijay Diwas 2025, Governore Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd), Major General MPS Gill, General Officer Commanding, Uttarakhand Sub Area, Major General Rohan Anand, ADG, NCC Uttarakhand Directorate, Group Captain Rishabh Sharma, Rear Admiral Peush Pawsey, Joint Chief Hydrographer, NHO Dehradun, and Senior Veterans paid homage to the fallen soldiers. The ceremony was also attended by serving Officers, JCOs & Other ranks of the Dehradun Station who resolved to emulate the heroic soldiers for the honour of the country.

The Governor interacted with serving and ex-servicemen and commended them for their invaluable contribution to the defence of the nation.

Referring to the historic, strategic and decisive victory of the 1971 India Pakistan War, the Governor described it as a landmark and golden chapter in India’s military history. He stated that the Indian Armed Forces, through exceptional bravery, courage and superior strategic planning, not only compelled the surrender of 93,000 enemy troops but also led to the division of Pakistan and emergence of Bangladesh as a new nation.

Highlighting the exemplary professionalism of the Armed Forces, the Governor said that their superior strategy, rigorous training, precise planning, discipline, dedication and unwavering commitment to the nation continue to inspire the country. He emphasised that caring for the families of soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation or were injured in the war 54 years ago is as shared responsibility. He called upon all to reaffirm their commitment to the dignity, security and welfare of these families.

The Governor further said that India is presently witnessing a comprehensive transformation in the areas of defence modernisation, technological advancement, future warfare preparedness and military capability. He noted that these developments would further strengthen the Armed Forces and enhance national security.

Vijay Diwas is not merely a remembrance of past victories, the Governor said, it also serves as a moment for reflection and renewed resolve. He stressed the need for continued preparedness and vigilance to effectively address future challenges and both internal and external security concerns.

Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year to mark the historic victory of Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the 1971 War and to pay homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. On the 16th day of December 1971, Indian Armed Forces under the dynamic leadership of General SFHJ Manekshaw, the then COAS, gave a crushing defeat to the Pakistan Army and paved the way for liberation of East Pakistan to form the new country of Bangladesh. The nation acknowledges the steadfast resolve and unparalleled courage of its soldiers who sacrificed their lives to achieve this unprecedented victory in the war of 1971.
