Dehradun, 25 Dec: Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) on Thursday participated as the Chief Guest in the “Atal Smriti Lecture Series–2025” organised at Lekhak Gaon, Thano.

On this occasion, he paid heartfelt tribute by offering a floral wreath at the statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee installed in the premises. The Governor also inaugurated the newly constructed auditorium during the programme.

Addressing the lecture series, the Governor said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not only a great statesman but also an idea, a philosophy, and a symbol of national consciousness. His visionary thinking provided a new direction to the country. His entire life was devoted to nation-building, democratic traditions, and constitutional values. He said that Atal Jayanti is celebrated as Good Governance Day, whose core spirit is not power but service. Accountability to the people, transparency, and sensitivity form the foundation of good governance.

The Governor said that, under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee,  the nation witnessed strong and sensitive leadership during the Pokhran nuclear tests and the Kargil War. At the same time, the Lahore Bus Yatra symbolised his belief that strength and peace complement each other. He said that the formation of the state of Uttarakhand in the year 2000 was the result of Atal’s farsightedness and his sensitive understanding of the needs of the Himalayan regions. His vision of “small state, big development” continues to guide Uttarakhand’s development even today.

Describing Lekhak Gaon as a strong centre of literature, culture, and ideological dialogue, the Governor said that this place is shaping the soul of society. He added that, in an environment like Lekhak Gaon, ideas arise naturally. He urged everyone to develop the habit of writing so that their thoughts and reflections can be preserved. He expressed confidence that this centre would prepare many writers in the future.

The Governor congratulated the winning children of the Bal Atal Lecture Competition by presenting them with awards. He thanked former Chief Minister and patron of Lekhak Gaon, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, the Lekhak Gaon family, organisers, scholars, and participants for the successful holding of the programme.
