Dehradun, 2 Dec: A serious accident occurred yesterday afternoon at the hostel of Doon Medical College, Patel Nagar, when a 24-year-old MBBS intern, Kartik Chaudhary, fell from the fourth floor while talking on his mobile phone. The incident took place around 1:30 p.m., and he was immediately rushed by hostel staff and the warden to the Emergency and OT Block of Doon Hospital. As of today, Chaudhary remains under close observation at the Medical College and the hospital doctors and his current situation has been described as stable.
Medical Superintendent Dr RS Bisht confirmed that a team of doctors was activated promptly after he was brought to the Doon Hospital to treat the injured student, given the critical nature of his condition. Chaudhary, a resident of Kashipur in Udham Singh Nagar district, sustained a hip bone fracture and severe head injuries requiring 22 stitches. Despite the seriousness of the fall, doctors have reported that his condition has stabilised and he is able to speak under medical supervision.
The hospital authorities stated that preliminary investigations suggest the intern lost his balance while walking and talking on his mobile phone, leading to the fall. The administration has indicated that further clarity will emerge once Chaudhary himself provides a detailed account of the incident.
The accident has raised serious concerns about safety measures within medical college hostels, particularly regarding balcony and corridor designs on upper floors. Students expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the need for reinforced railings and stricter hostel safety protocols. Doon Medical College, which has been expanding its intake and facilities to strengthen Uttarakhand’s medical education infrastructure, is now expected to review hostel safety standards in light of this accident.
Chaudhary remains under close observation in the Emergency Ward. Doctors have said that while his injuries are serious, his recovery prospects are positive given his stable condition.
