Dehradun, 12 Jan: The Wildlife Preservation Society, Dehradun, established on 13 April 1958, is one of the oldest societies in India involved in Wildlife Conservation and has the rare distinction of having two past Presidents of India, VV Giri and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as Chief Patrons. The Society was renamed as The Wildlife Preservation Society of India in 1960. The Society constitution was registered under the Societies Registration Act 21 of 1960.
Over the years, the Society has diversified its aims to include not only wildlife but also awareness towards Climate Change, conservation of environment and Biodiversity, and Management of the Zoological Park. The Society started publication of a wildlife journal by the name, ‘The Cheetal’, in October 1958.
The first meeting for the year 2026 was held at the WPS office, New Road, Dehradun. The meeting was chaired by the President, Dr Dushyant Singh Gaur. Members from India and abroad attended the meeting.
The highlight of the meeting was a Power Point Presentation by guest speaker, Jasbir Singh Chauhan, IFS. He is an IFS officer from the batch of 1987. He has spent much of his career in the field. He recently retired from the post of Chief Wildlife Warden, Madhya Pradesh. Chauhan spoke about Wildlife Management in Madhya Pradesh. He discussed in detail the rewilding of Tiger Cubs, relocating Gaur, relocating Barasingha, Tigers, Wild Buffalo, and Gariyal conservation, as well reintroduction of Cheetahs. The talk was highly informative and much appreciated by all.
President Dr Dushyant Singh Gaur proposed the vote of thanks.
