84 persons have died due to landslides, so far, as rains continue to lash U’khand

Dehradun, 23 Aug: The rains continue to lash Dehradun and most of the state. It may be recalled that a red alert has been issued in several districts including Dehradun till 24 August. As per the evening report issued by the government, so far 88 persons have died in the landslides and flooding in the state this season. In addition, 18 others are missing and 47 persons have been injured, so far.

Heavy rains have thrown life out of gear in many places including Mussoorie. A landslide occurred near a hotel on Mall Road at around 3 p.m. due to which people walking there had a narrow escape, as they were able to avoid the debris. A hotel building in Mall Road was damaged due to the landslide.

On the other hand, Pipalkoti and Guniyala villages in district Chamoli are reported to be at great risk due to landslides. The villagers sent a memorandum to MP Tirath Singh Rawat, demanding that protective work be done in the village.

Heavy rains in Guniyala village of Bemru Gram Panchayat on 13 August have caused cracks and landslides on the hill above the village. In such a situation, the very existence of the village is at a great risk. The road from Pipalkoti to Guniyal is also destroyed to a great extent and the dam culvert is also broken. In addition, a landslide occurred on this road below Math village, which has reached the village and 20 families of the village have come under its effect. The local villagers have demanded repair of the damaged roads in the letter written to Tirath Singh Rawat from MPLAD funds.

More than a hundred roads are closed to traffic. Even the Rishikesh-Gangotri Highway was closed for traffic due to landslides at several places, forcing the administration to divert the traffic. However, as per the latest report issued in the evening, this highway has again opened up for traffic. One person died after being buried in debris this afternoon while another was injured in Thalisain Block of district Pauri. The incident occurred on the Jagatpuri-Ramnagar Road.
