Dehradun, 22 Jun: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Centre, Dehradun, has forecast continued rainfall activity across Uttarakhand’s hill districts over the next several days, while the plains of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are expected to remain largely dry. The forecast, issued this afternoon, indicates light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated to scattered locations in most hill districts till 28 June.
According to the latest seven-day district-level weather forecast, rain activity is likely to persist in the state’s mountainous regions from 23 June onwards, with districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh expected to receive light to moderate rainfall at a few places on Tuesday. Very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms is also likely at isolated places in the remaining districts, including Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Almora and Champawat.
The weather office has advised residents and pilgrims travelling through the hill districts to remain alert as thunderstorm activity is expected to accompany the rainfall in several areas. A yellow alert has been issued till 25 June for parts of the state owing to the possibility of rain and thunderstorms.
The forecast suggests that the rainfall activity will become more widespread on 24 June, when most hill districts are likely to witness light to moderate rain at isolated places. Thunderstorm activity is also expected during this period. However, the two plain districts of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are likely to remain dry, with no significant rainfall activity anticipated.
A similar weather pattern is expected to continue on 25 June. Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at a few places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, while isolated rainfall activity is expected in the remaining hill districts and in Dehradun. But once again, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are predicted to experience dry weather conditions.
The IMD forecast indicates little change in weather conditions on 26 and 27 June. Rain and thunderstorms are likely to occur at isolated places across the hill districts, while the plains are expected to remain largely free from rainfall. Dry weather is likely to prevail in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar throughout this period.
Looking further ahead, the weather office has forecast a fresh spell of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at a few places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, Nainital, Champawat and Pithoragarh on 28 June, indicating that rainfall activity over the hills is likely to continue beyond the current forecast period.
With intermittent rain and thunderstorms expected across several pilgrimage routes in the coming days, authorities are likely to keep a close watch on weather conditions, particularly in the higher reaches of the state. The Meteorological Centre has advised people to remain updated with official weather bulletins and exercise caution while travelling through hilly areas during periods of rainfall and thunderstorm activity.
