Dehradun, 12 Jul: In an innovative initiative to popularise the folk languages of Uttarakhand, Colonel (Dr) DP Dimri and his team members—Prithvi, Saraswati, Narendra, Urmila Singh, and Puran—have developed the app-based instant pocket dictionary, Aakhar. At a function held at Guru Ram Rai Darbar, here, Mahant Devendra Das formally inaugurated the app and described it as a visionary step toward the preservation and promotion of mother tongues. He also extended his congratulations and best wishes to Colonel Dr Dimri.
This digital dictionary, encompassing Hindi, English, Garhwali, Kumaoni, and Jaunsari, will facilitate the understanding and adoption of commonly used words, phrases, and idioms in everyday communication.
An alumnus of Shri Guru Ram Rai PG College, Colonel Dr Dimri has served in the Indian Army and has also worked as an advisor on skills and entrepreneurship to the Government of India. He believes that Aakhar will connect Uttarakhandis living across the world, members of the Indian diaspora, and the younger generation with their cultural roots, while encouraging the use of local languages in families, social gatherings, and cultural events.
The enthusiastic response from users has infused this initiative with renewed momentum. The app will remain open to suggestions and is expected to be available on the Google platform shortly. Rekha Dimri was also present at the ceremony. Actively engaged in the promotion of Uttarakhand’s language, culture, and education, Colonel Dr Dimri also periodically provides scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections.
