Dehradun, 18 Apr: Doctors at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Dehradun, performed a Radical Completion Cholecystectomy to remove cancerous cells from the liver of a 69 -year-old patient. Radical Completion Cholecystectomy and Wedge Resection of liver depends on where the cancer is and how far it might have spread. At a minimum, an extended cholecystectomy removes the gallbladder, about an inch or more of liver tissue next to the gallbladder, including all of the lymph nodes in the surrounding region.
The patient’s liver cancer was diagnosed accidentally when she went for gallbladder surgery. During the surgery, doctors discovered a large mass around her gallbladder that was not visible otherwise.
The procedure was performed by a surgical GI oncologist who successfully removed a portion of the liver and surrounding tissues to save the patient’s life.
Sharing case details, Dr Vishal Nidhi Kulshrestha, Principal Consultant, Gastrointestinal & Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgical Oncology, said, “The patient had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for the past three months and had visited several doctors without improvement in her condition after taking prescribed medicines. She initially came to the hospital for gallstone removal surgery, but during the procedure, doctors discovered a large mass around her gallbladder that was not visible otherwise. They took a sample of the mass and sent it for evaluation, which revealed that it was cancerous and could have spread to the liver and other areas.”
“Despite the challenges posed by the patient’s previous surgery, we knew we had to act quickly to prevent the cancer from spreading further. Within a month, we performed the Radical Completion Cholecystectomy, which involved cutting into the same site as the previous surgery, causing some bleeding complications,” Dr Kulshrestha added.
The surgery was a success, and the patient is now leading a healthy life.
Furthermore, Dr Mayank Nautiyal, Consultant, Gastrointestinal Surgery, said, “Max Hospital, Dehradun also has a liver clinic that provides liver physicians and surgeons who can offer help and advice to patients suffering from jaundice, alcohol-related problems, end-stage liver cirrhosis, fatty liver, liver cancer, viral hepatitis, and other liver diseases. The clinic provides a treatment plan tailored for individual patients to increase awareness and optimally treat liver disease in the region. The doctors’ dedication and expertise in performing the advanced hepatectomy demonstrates the importance of timely and effective treatment for liver cancer.”
Dr Karamjot Singh Bedi, Consultant, Gastrointestinal Surgery, added, “The hospital is equipped with all the latest diagnostics and techniques prevalent in the industry and is strongly backed by an existing expert panel of doctors to handle critical cases. Being a pioneer in the healthcare industry, we believe the hospital would continue to render more quality healthcare services with the right infrastructure and expertise.”
