Dehradun, 7 Feb: A talk on ‘Herbs, Health & Humour’ was delivered by Dr S Farooq to the residents of Antara Hilltop Residency, Mussoorie Road, here, on 5 February. The meeting was presided over by Kamlesh Sharma and Moin Khan.

The talk lasted for about an hour. The residents took keen interest and their curiosity was satisfied by the speaker.

Dr S Farooq said, “‘Health’ is a balance between body and mind. The mind or brain is the most complex part of the nervous system in our body’s control centre. The brain can be divided into three regions: Cerebrum, Cerebellum & Brain-stem. Thus, we find, God has created a separate segment; namely the cerebrum to monitor our thoughts to keep a balance against all divisive and unwelcome notions. Humour, emotions such as anxiety, fear and anger cause an alteration in certain chemicals in the brain. Thus, we find ‘Health, Humour & Herbs’ are the three inseparables and they play a pivotal role.”

Herbs have been used as food and for medicinal purposes for centuries, he reminded. Research interest has focused on various herbs that possess hypolipidemic, antiplatelet, antitumor, or immune-stimulating properties that may be useful adjuncts in helping reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Numerous plants and their constituents are recommended in traditional practices of medicine to enhance cognitive function and to alleviate other symptoms of AD, including poor cognition, memory loss, and depression.

Neuroprotective herbs for the management of AD have a wide gamut of physiological actions. Neurotherapeutic properties of herbs that ultimately enhance memory and restore normal cognitive functions are Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Jal Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) Brahmi Mandok Parni (Centella asiatica), Saffron (Crocus Sativus), Shankpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis), Triphala (Emblica officinalis), and Turmeric (Curcuma longa).

AM Khan proposed the vote of thanks.
