Dehradun, 31 May: The Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project (REAP) is bridging the gap between economic vulnerability and empowerment. REAP is working diligently to connect women members of self-help groups and federations with livelihood-oriented and entrepreneurial activities formed under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). The goal is to enhance their income and create sustainable livelihoods.
Within the project, a crucial activity is providing support to ultra-poor families for establishing enterprises. These families receive an interest-free loan of Rs 35,000 to kickstart their entrepreneurial ventures. The focus is on empowering women from marginalised backgrounds, ensuring they have the means to thrive.
As part of the project, various livelihood activities are being implemented, including the establishment of businesses by ultra-poor families. This initiative not only provides financial assistance but also fosters capacity-building and skill development. Through REAP, these families are on the path to economic stability and self-reliance.
In the village of Badhwala, Sunita Pun’s story is a remarkable testament to resilience and transformation. A member of the Santoshi Naman Self-Help Group and the Saraswati Gram Organisation, Sunita has turned her economic hardships into a success story, becoming a thriving retail shop owner with the support of the Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project (REAP) Dehradun.
Sunita’s life was once marked by daily struggles. As a daily wage labourer, she faced the constant uncertainties and challenges that come with unsteady employment. The inconsistent nature of her income made financial planning nearly impossible, and the limited livelihood options in her village added to her woes. Providing for her family’s basic needs was a relentless worry.
However, the turning point in Sunita’s life came with the Ultra-Poor Package under the REAP initiative. Rural Enterprise Acceleration Project in Dehradun aims to empower economically disadvantaged individuals by providing them with the resources and support like interest free loan and marketing platform to start their own businesses. For Sunita, this meant the opportunity to start her small retail shop.
With the funds from the Ultra-Poor Package, Sunita invested in a wider range of products and improved her store’s infrastructure, which in turn attracted more customers. Her entrepreneurial spirit, bolstered by the training and resources from REAP, allowed her to effectively manage and grow her business. She began catering to the needs of her community, ensuring that her shop stocked items in demand and offering excellent customer service.
The results were transformative. Sunita’s retail business saw a significant increase in daily income, averaging Rs 600 per day. This steady income has brought financial stability to her household, allowing her to save and plan for the future.
With her increased earnings, Sunita is now able to save money and plan ahead, providing a sense of financial stability that was previously out of reach.
This success has made her an inspiration for other women in her village, demonstrating the potential for economic independence. The stable income has enabled Sunita to better provide for her family’s needs, significantly improving their quality of life.
Reflecting on her success, Sunita shared, “The support from REAP Dehradun has changed my life in ways I never thought possible. Running my own retail shop has given me not only financial stability but also a sense of pride and accomplishment. I encourage other women in similar situations to take advantage of such opportunities. Believe in yourself and your abilities; with hard work and the right support, you can achieve great things.”
