Dehradun, 5 August: Shaurya Chakra winner Captain Mohan Singh Rawat (Retd) made a courtesy call on Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) at the Raj Bhawan, here, on Monday. Captain Mohan Singh Rawat, a native of Uttarakhand, whose name is included among the courageous and brave soldiers of the country, has set a unique example of indomitable courage and valour in the service of the country.
Lt Gen Singh said that the country is safe because of brave sons like Captain Mohan Singh Rawat and all are indebted to their sacrifices. Brave sons like Captain Mohan of Veerbhoomi Uttarakhand are a source of inspiration for every Indian. He said that Captain Rawat has brought glory to not only his family but the entire country.
On this occasion, the Governor also presented Captain Mohan Singh Rawat a memento.
Captain Mohan Singh Rawat recalled his encounter and said that on 5 July 1999, at 2 a.m., information was received that a contingent of the Pakistani army had entered the country’s border. Captain Rawat left with the battalion at that time and after walking continuously for four hours, he encountered Pakistani soldiers. Captain Rawat killed three Pakistani soldiers. After this, a Pakistani soldier hiding behind the trees shot at him with an AK-47. As many as 17 bullets hit his body. Rawat’s courage did not decrease and he took out a hand grenade from his jacket and killed the Pakistani soldiers.
