Civic Polls: Nominations of 202 candidates rejected during scrutiny

Dehradun, 2 Jan: After two days of scrutiny in 100 municipal bodies of Uttarakhand, 202 nominations have been rejected on technical grounds by the election officials in the state. The scrutiny was completed late last night. Today was the final day also for the withdrawal of nominations by the candidates, following which, the final lists of all the candidates in the fray in 11 Municipal Corporations, 43 Municipal Councils and 46 Nagar Panchayats of the state are complete.

Nomination papers were scrutinised on 31 December and yesterday and the process was completed late last night. For the mayoral post in the 11 municipal corporations, 103 nominations were received, with two being rejected. In the 43 municipal councils, 285 nominations were received for the chairperson’s post, of which 20 were rejected. For the chairperson’s post in 46 nagar panchayats, 302 nominations were received and of these, 12 were rejected by the election officials after scrutiny. Out of a total of 690 nominations for mayor and president positions, 34 were cancelled, leaving 656 valid nominations: 101 for mayor, 265 for municipality president, and 290 for nagar panchayat president.

On the last day of scrutiny for the local body general election, 2 nominations for Nagar Pramukh, 32 nominations for Chairman, and 168 nominations for councillor/member were rejected. This includes 20 nominations for Nagar Palika Parishad municipal chairperson and 12 for Nagar Panchayat.

For municipal corporators, councillors and ward member positions, 5750 nominations were received across all the 100 bodies, with 5582 being declared as valid, after 168 nominations were rejected. These include 2240 valid nominations for Municipal Corporators, 1834 for Municipal Councillors and 1508 for Nagar Panchayat members.

Election symbols will be allotted tomorrow. In addition, a clear and final picture regarding candidates in the fray will emerge by tomorrow after the withdrawal of nominations as the parties like BJP and Congress continued to make efforts to convince their rebel candidates to withdraw nominations. Voting for the ULBs will be held on 23 January and counting held on 25 January.
