Dehradun, 31 Jul: Acting on the directives issued by District Magistrate Savin Bansal, the Public Works Department is executing critical drainage work along a 180-metre stretch in Amit Gram, Gumaniwala, to combat persistent waterlogging in Rishikesh. It may be recalled that the DM had sanctioned the necessary budget and instructed officials last month to initiate the work without any further delay. In compliance with these orders, the drainage project began promptly and the district administration has claimed that 80 per cent of the work has been completed, with approximately 144 metres laid.

In a stern follow-up, the DM today reiterated that the chronic waterlogging in Rishikesh city must be resolved under all circumstances. He had earlier pinpointed the primary source of the problem, the HUME pipe drainage at Gumaniwala Chowk, and instructed its immediate excavation, cleaning, and realignment. Sanctioning the required funds on the spot, Bansal had stressed on the urgency of completing the remaining 36 metres and directed PWD officials to pursue the task on a war footing. Emphasising public welfare, he stated unequivocally that citizens, including women, the elderly, and children, should not be left to suffer inundation due to administrative delays.

To address the broader monsoon-induced waterlogging concerns, the DM has further directed Jal Nigam to devise a comprehensive plan for effective water drainage. The issue of blocked drains near Amit Gram is being tackled through removal and realignment of previously installed HUME pipes, with 80 per cent of the realignment now completed and remaining work progressing rapidly.
