As the year draws to its pinnacle, the festive Dussehra, Diwali, and holiday season arrives, rejuvenating the spirits of all. Streets and neighbourhoods come alive with lights, colours, and the sound of celebration. Among the many symbols of this joyful period, one iconic and truly evocative presence is the dhol. Its beats resonate through communities, calling attention not just to festivities but also to a shared cultural heritage. Drum beaters, moving from home to home, bring energy, joy, and a sense of unity with every thumping rhythm, creating an atmosphere of festivity that is both infectious and heart-warming.

Yet, despite their vibrant contribution to the festive spirit, these spirited performers are often overlooked, sometimes mistaken for beggars drumming at your gate—which they are not. Their role is far more significant. The drumbeat is a cultural invitation, a reminder of traditions that bind communities together, and a source of simple yet profound joy. I make it a point to welcome them whenever they visit, encouraging them to perform at my place and offering a token of appreciation for the exuberance they bring. A gesture as simple as this goes a long way in valuing their efforts and spreading the festive cheer.

There is something uniquely uplifting about the sound of the dhol. It is more than music—it is a rhythm of life, a beat that resonates with the heart of the festival season. Don’t let these rejuvenators leave your doorstep empty-handed—their music fills both hearts and homes with joy, reminding us of the beauty of shared celebrations and the importance of acknowledging those who keep traditions alive.

This morning, I had the pleasure of recording a drum beater performing at my place, capturing the energy and spirit of the festival. While I cannot let you hear the thumping drum beat directly, the picture of the young lad with his dhol will bring the rhythm to life if you can visualise it. Next time you hear a drum beater nearby, take a moment to enjoy the vibrant rhythms of the dhol and feel the pulse of our festive Spirit – and, yes, don’t ignore them.

As we embrace the lights, colours, and sounds of this season, let us remember to celebrate not just with our eyes and taste buds, but with our hearts and ears. Wishing everyone a happy and joyous festive season—may you resonate with the echoes of celebration!
