NAINITAL, 10 Jan: In a deeply moving incident reflecting extraordinary loyalty and courage, a German Shepherd dog named Pilot sacrificed his life to save his owner from a tiger attack in Madanpur Gaibua village, situated close to the Terai West Forest Division in Nainital district. The dog fought the tiger with remarkable bravery until his last breath, ensuring that his owner escaped unharmed. Although Pilot lost his life in the encounter, his act of valour has left the entire village grief-stricken and has emerged as a powerful symbol of devotion and sacrifice.
The incident occurred when Madanpur Gaibua resident Rakshit Pandey had gone towards the fields to eat sugarcane, accompanied by his pet dog. According to villagers, a tiger was lying in wait in the nearby area and suddenly tried to pounce on Pandey. Sensing the imminent danger, Pilot immediately charged at the tiger to stop the attack. A fierce struggle ensued between the dog and the tiger, during which Pandey managed to get vital time to run to safety. The tiger eventually overpowered the dog, resulting in Pilot’s death on the spot. After the incident, a visibly shaken Pandey informed his family members and villagers about the horrific encounter.
The news of the incident spread rapidly, triggering panic in the village and drawing a large number of residents to the site. Local BJP leader Vipin Kandpal was informed about the matter and he, in turn, alerted Terai West Forest Division Divisional Forest Officer Prakash Chandra Arya. A team from the forest department reached the spot, conducted a post-mortem examination of the dog and assured villagers that forest patrolling would be intensified to keep a close watch on the tiger’s movement.
Vipin Kandpal stated that the frequent presence of the tiger in and around the village has created an atmosphere of fear, with people afraid to step out of their homes after sunset. He urged the forest department to capture the tiger at the earliest and relocate it to a safe forest area away from human habitation. Forest officials have assured the villagers that monitoring teams are already deployed and all necessary steps are being taken to address the situation. DFO Prakash Chandra Arya has also appealed to residents to remain alert and avoid going to the fields alone, particularly during the early morning and evening hours, as forest department teams continue their regular patrols in the area.
