Dehradun, 6 Nov: For centuries, Uttarakhand has been known for its sacred Char Dham, attracting devotees from across the world. Today, the state is redefining itself—not only as a spiritual destination but also as a centre of literature, culture, and creativity.
Nestled near Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport, in the tranquil lap of the Himalayas, Lekhak Gaon—India’s first village dedicated entirely to writers—stands as a symbol of this cultural resurgence. Conceived and nurtured under the visionary guidance of Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and supported by his family, Lekhak Gaon represents the confluence of art, intellect, and nature.
Lekhak Gaon was inaugurated on 24 October 2024 by the former President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, in the presence of Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd), Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and former Chief Minister and Union Minister Dr Nishank. In a short span, it has earned national recognition as a dynamic centre of literary and cultural activity.
From 3 to 5 October, Lekhak Gaon hosted an International Literature Festival, inaugurated by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and concluded by Chief Minister Dhami. Eminent writers, poets, and artists from India and abroad participated, transforming the village into a vibrant platform for dialogue and creativity.
Beyond its architectural beauty, Lekhak Gaon embodies a deeper vision—where words find harmony with nature and creativity blends with consciousness. It promotes environmental awareness, preserves folk traditions, and nurtures young literary talent.
Having been associated with Lekhak Gaon since its inception, I have witnessed its inspiring journey from concept to reality. Guided by Dr Nishank’s leadership and his family’s dedication, Lekhak Gaon stands today as a beacon of India’s literary spirit and a living tribute to Uttarakhand’s timeless cultural soul.
