Dehradun, 15 Jul: The preliminary round of the Frank Anthony Memorial All India Debate Competition 2024 category -1 was hosted by Raja Rammohan Roy Academy on behalf of the council for the ISCE for pool A7, here, today.
The following 10 schools participated in it – Wynberg-Allen, Mussoorie, St Joseph’s Academy, Convent of Jesus and Mary, St George’s College, Mussoorie, and Dehradun’s Brooklyn School, Touchwood School, Shri Ram Centennial School, Doon Cambridge School, Seven Oaks School, and Maitri Kiran High School, Gurugram.
The Chief Guest Anuj S Singh, the founder principal of Prakriti Valley School, Dehradun.
It was an extempore debate wherein the topic was disclosed at 9:30 a.m. and the contestants got one hour to prepare their subject matter sitting in the school library under the supervision of the staff. The debate started at 10:30 a.m. and the entire programme concluded at 1:40 p.m.
The debate was judged by Dr Kumar Shravan, Dr Rashmi and Dr Swarleen Kaur. The competition was chaired by Navita Malhotra. The topic of the debate was “Search for a new world spells doom for the world we live in”. All the speakers argued well. The best speaker was Tanushka Panwar, CJM, and the first runner up was Gauri Singhal, CJM. Convent of Jesus and Mary emerged as the winning team and St George’s College was adjudged the first Runner up.
The judges on the panel shared certain minute things to observe while debating. They enlightened the students on the scope of motion under fire. Moderator Navita Malhotra emphasised demeanour and poise. Dr Kumar highlighted body language that strengthens the conviction of the speakers.
The Chief Guest described the speakers as wonderful. The Principal, Bharti Vishnoi, emphasised on not having the new world, rather sustaining the old one with renewable sources.
