Almora, 9 May: After the forest fires wreaked havoc in Someshwar over the past few days, it was another kind of trouble late last night when a cloudburst was reported. Heavy rains also led to damage and flooding in Kapkot (District Bageshwar) late last night and this morning.

In Someshwar, due to cloudburst, debris entered many houses causing damage to a number of houses there. The rains continued today in the area. The heavy rains have, however, extinguished the raging forest fires in this region. Farmers have reported crop losses due to the rains.

After the cloudburst in Adhuriya village in Someshwar Block, water entered the houses. Cracks appeared in some houses as a result besides covering some houses with debris.  As a result of the cloudburst and unusually heavy spell of rains, the Almora-Kausani highway connecting Almora and Bageshwar districts has been closed.

In addition to Someshwar, heavy rains and resultant flooding was also witnessed in Kapkot in District Bageshwar and, due to the rains, the Kunti Nullah came into spate forcing the people to stay in the houses in fear due to the overflow.

Due to this torrential rain, Sai and Kosi rivers are also reported to be in spate. On receiving information about the cloudburst, a team of the district administration reached the spot. Officials claim that there was no loss of life due to the incident. The extent of damage is being assessed.

In addition, a heavy hailstorm was reported from Purola in district Uttarkashi early this morning, causing damage to the fruit crops in the area.

It may be recalled that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an alert yesterday, predicting heavy rains, thunderstorms and hailstorms in the state till 13 May.
