Dehradun, 23 Jun: Congress today welcomed the stay granted by the Uttarakhand High Court on the panchayat election process and claimed that it has consistently raised objections to the reservation list issued by the state government for the upcoming panchayat elections. The party stated that it had flagged concerns across various forums and had been questioning the rationale behind the reservation roster since its release.
Reacting to the court’s decision in this case, Karan Mahara said the government was attempting to conduct the panchayat elections in an arbitrary manner, prompting the intervention of the Nainital High Court. He added that while the government ignored the objections raised by Congress, he and his party are pleased that the court has taken cognisance of the matter and stayed the flawed election process.
He further reminded that Congress had been raising several issues over the past few days, including the decision to reset the reservation roster to zero and the scheduling of elections over two dates. “The court has now taken note of all these concerns,” Mahara added.
Highlighting the party’s stance, Mahara said that whether it was the issue of nullifying the reservation roster or the failure to release reservations for Zila Panchayats, these were all irrational decisions. Many individuals were being deprived of their right to contest, and Congress had been questioning the government on these matters. The government remained indifferent, but now the High Court has imposed a stay.
