As the crisp October air carries a quiet sense of farewell over Dehradun, these next two or three days are gently asking us to prepare for a goodbye that feels far too sudden. Working closely with him for almost the whole of his tenure I find myself looking back at a journey that was as enriching as it was historic. In the 26-year history of Uttarakhand since its formation on November 9, 2000, no Governor has served this state longer than Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, completing an extraordinary tenure of five years and one month. Yet, beyond the impressive timeline lies a human legacy that touched every life he encountered in Devbhoomi.
From his decorated decades in uniform to the highest constitutional office of the state, his conduct was a masterclass in poise, patience, and genuine care for people. Having observed him from up close, his leadership always felt like a rare harmony of military discipline and unconditional warmth. He carried the decorum of a decorated officer, yet spoke with the gentleness of a guardian. Where ordinary people would lose their patience or react with anger, I never once heard him raise his voice or express annoyance; he simply smiled, meeting every high-stress challenge with deep composure and inner poise. Long before I learned about Dale Carnegie’s principles of human behavior, I saw them lived out daily in the Governor’s routine. He made it a point to notice the smallest efforts of the most humble staff, turning routine acts into moments of extraordinary confidence. His thoughts forever revolved around bringing hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging to the person standing at the very last line of society. As John C. Maxwell rightly said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
Equally central to this glorious chapter was the graceful presence of the First Lady, Gurmeet Kaur. With her innate warmth, poise, and motherly affection, she transformed Lok Bhawan (Raj Bhawan) into a home for everyone, standing as a pillar of strength and elegance throughout these five years. Together, they filled the estate with vibrant memories that will linger in our hearts for years to come. From the joyous celebrations of Lohri, Holi, and Diwali to birthdays, anniversaries, traditional military Bada Khana, and warmth-filled Parivar Milan gatherings, Raj Bhawan pulsed with a rare sense of family and togetherness.
As he prepares to step down and embark on his next journey, Devbhoomi bids farewell not just to its longest–serving constitutional head, but to a decorated soldier, an authentic statesman, and a mentor who showed us that true power is always wrapped in humility and affection.
