GADARPUR/DEHRADUN, 13 Jun: In a development that has generated considerable political interest in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday visited the residence of Gadarpur MLA Arvind Pandey, marking what many observers see as a significant thaw in relations between the two senior BJP leaders after months of speculation over huge differences within the ruling party.
A temporary helipad had been constructed near the Gularbhoj Dam for the CM’s arrival. After landing, Dhami was received by Arvind Pandey along with party office-bearers and local leaders. In a gesture that immediately caught political attention, the CM and the Gadarpur MLA travelled together in the same vehicle from the helipad to Pandey‘s residence, signalling a visible display of unity.
The visit assumes significance as it comes against the backdrop of a prolonged period of political unease between Dhami and Pandey, which had become a major subject of discussion in Uttarakhand’s political circles. Pandey, a former Cabinet Minister and one of the BJP’s prominent leaders in the Terai region, had in recent months been openly critical of certain decisions and functioning of his own government. His statements had fuelled speculation regarding his equation with the CM and the possibility of growing factionalism within the State BJP.
The situation became even more sensitive after a series of legal and administrative developments involving Pandey and members of his family. Authorities in Udham Singh Nagar had initiated proceedings and registered cases relating to alleged encroachment of government land. Following these developments, Pandey had publicly maintained that he and his family were being unfairly targeted. He had written separate letters to Chief Minister Dhami and Director General of Police Deepam Seth, seeking a fair, transparent and impartial investigation into all allegations levelled against him and his family members. Pandey had asserted that he had full faith in the law and had sought an unbiased probe to establish the facts. In fact, the Congress President Ganesh Godiyal had also claimed that Pandey had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi complaining of harassment and demand for fair inquiry. For some days, Pandey did not react, but the party then called him to Dehradun, where he was made to address a press conference claiming that no such letter had been written by him to PM Modi.
The political ramifications of the developments extended beyond the immediate controversy. Several political leaders, including Haridwar MP and former Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, and Garhwal MP Anil Baluni who are widely perceived to share a somewhat strained relationship with the present State leadership, visited Pandey during the period of uncertainty. These interactions further intensified speculation about emerging power centres within the BJP and reportedly caused concern among sections of the party leadership.
Amid growing discussions over internal differences, BJP leaders repeatedly attempted to project organisational unity. However, political observers continued to view the DhamiPandey relationship as one of the key issues shaping the internal dynamics of the ruling party in Uttarakhand.
A visible change in the atmosphere was however witnessed during the recent visit of BJP National President Nitin Nabin to Dehradun. During the visit, Nabin held detailed discussions with Pandey and other senior party leaders. Later, a photograph session was organised in which Dhami and Pandey were seen together alongside the BJP National President. The images were widely circulated and interpreted as a message of reconciliation. According to party sources, both leaders were advised by the central leadership to set aside their differences and work collectively in the larger interest of the organisation and the government and in view of the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttarakhand.
Against this backdrop, Dhami‘s visit to Gadarpur has acquired added significance. It was the Chief Minister’s first visit to the constituency after the recent efforts at reconciliation. Political observers noted that the cordial welcome extended by Pandey at the helipad and the decision of both leaders to travel together to the MLA’s residence represented a marked departure from the tensions that had dominated political discussions in recent months.
The meeting has triggered fresh debate within political circles regarding the future course of BJP politics in Uttarakhand. While party leaders have maintained that there were never any serious differences and that organisational unity remains intact, many observers believe the latest developments indicate a conscious effort by the party leadership to strengthen cohesion ahead of future political challenges.
The images emerging from Gadarpur, showing Dhami and Pandey together in a display of camaraderie, are being viewed as an important political message from the BJP at a time when the party is keen to present a united front in the State. Whether the rapprochement translates into a lasting political understanding remains to be seen, but the CM’s visit has undoubtedly become one of the most talked-about political developments in Uttarakhand in recent days.
