DEHRADUN, 18 Jul: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken serious note of the concerns expressed by citizens, environmentalists and local residents regarding the Dehradun–Rishikesh four/six lane highway project. In a post on his X account, the CM shared that he has directed officials to suspend that tree felling under the project until a broad consensus is achieved on this respect. The project, being executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is a significant infrastructure initiative being carried out in compliance with the directions of the High Court and after obtaining all statutory and environmental clearances.
In view of wildlife conservation, the plan includes a 3.5‑km. elephant underpass and special culverts for the movement of smaller animals. These measures are expected to reduce human–wildlife conflict and road accidents leading to animal deaths, which are frequently reported along this route. The CM emphasised that while development is essential, no decision will be taken at the cost of public sentiment, environmental balance or local interests. He has instructed the Principal Secretary and the officials concerned to hold detailed consultations afresh with all stakeholders, including local citizens, public representatives and experts.
He reiterated that the government will proceed with full respect for the directions and decisions of the High Court. Until a satisfactory atmosphere of agreement and trust is established among all parties, tree felling under the project will remain suspended. Stressing that the nature of Uttarakhand, the sentiments of its people and the development of the State are equally important, he said the government will move forward only on the basis of dialogue, consensus and wider public interest.
