Dehradun, 31 Dec: The famous folk singer of Uttarakhand, Narendra Singh Negi paid obeisance at the Guru Ram Rai Darbar, here, today. He reached the Darbar Sahib this morning and met the Mahant, Devendra Dass. During the meeting, the two discussed in detail, language, its conservation and enrichment.
It’s worth mentioning that the Delhi Government is working on the conservation of folk languages. The Government of Uttarakhand is also moving forward on publicising, creating awareness on and enrichment of Garhwali, Kumaoni and other folk languages. Under this mission, the Language and Culture Department of Shri Guru Ram Rai University is going to work on conserving the folk languages.
As Chancellor of Shri Guru Ram Rai University, Mahant Devendra Dass said that SGRR University would take responsibility for publicising the folk culture of Uttarakhand under the guidance of Narendra Singh Negi. Negi has been presenting the culture, beliefs, traditions and culture of Uttarakhand over the last 44 years through his songs. Shri Guru Ram Rai University will document and study his songs. Projects will be undertaken by the University to take the folk culture of Uttarakhand to all parts of India and abroad.
Narendra Singh Negi started his journey as a folk singer in 1974. Mahant Devendra Dass said that Negi’s life had been devoted not only to singing folk songs, but also to social work. This was the reason why Uttarakhand lived in the songs of Negi Da.
