Dehradun, 30 Aug: Governor Lt General Gurmit Singh (Retd) has convened the monsoon session of the state assembly with effect from 5 September. This is stated in a press note issued by the Assembly Secretariat today. According to sources, the session may last up to 8 September. It has become necessary to convene the assembly session in early September as six months would have elapsed since the last session. As per Constitutional provisions under Article 174, it is mandatory to hold sessions of the state assemblies and the parliament at least once every six months and for this the onus has also been laid under the Article 174 on the Governor of the state. The governor has to act on the advice of the government in this regard.

In the session that is now scheduled to begin from 5 September, the government hopes to bring some important bills, a decision on which the cabinet already has accorded its approval. In addition, some annual reports of various bodies are also expected to be tabled in the House. In all, around 600 questions have been received by the assembly secretariat for the upcoming sessions. These questions have been forwarded already to the departments concerned seeking a proper reply that can be tabled in the house. In a session that may last only up to 4 days, it is unlikely that all the questions would be taken up. Most of the questions will be tabled along with the received response as unstarred ones which do not require the minister concerned to stand up and physically respond to them.

Sources also said that a supplementary budget may also be tabled.
