ROORKEE (Haridwar), 13 May: Haridwar district was shaken by a gruesome incident in Roorkee where a man was found murdered inside a deaddiction centre. The victim’s throat was allegedly slit with a sharp weapon and his blood-soaked body was discovered in the bathroom of the facility. The case falls under Civil Lines police station, and the police have taken the body into custody while launching a full investigation.
The incident occurred at Anmol Deaddiction Centre in Bhangedi village. The deceased, Ashish, aged 39, was a resident of Baserhi village in Laksar. He had been battling addiction for a long time and was admitted to the centre by his family nearly three months ago. On Wednesday morning, another inmate entered the bathroom and was horrified to find Ashish lying in a pool of blood with his throat slit. His cries brought the centre’s operator and staff rushing to the spot.
The operator immediately informed the police, who arrived and began their inquiry. Statements of patients and staff have been recorded, and CCTV footage is being examined. Initial suspicion suggests that someone within the centre may have committed the crime. The body has been sent for post-mortem and the family has been informed. Inspector Pradeep Bisht confirmed that the police are pursuing the case and will soon uncover the truth.
The murder has raised serious concerns about the safety and management of rehabilitation centres. Families entrust these institutions with the care of their loved ones, expecting recovery and protection, but the incident has exposed alarming lapses. The murder of Ashish inside a facility meant for healing has devastated his family and shaken public confidence. It may be reminded here that de-addiction centres in Uttarakhand have been often in news more for wrong reasons than the right ones.
