Dehradun, 11 Jun: A shocking case of cruelty against a pregnant woman by her husband in Sahaspur has come to light. Bablu, originally hailing from Didwadi in Panipat, Haryana and presently residing in Jassowala, Sahaspur, has been accused of the alleged brutal assault of his wife Seema after forcing her to undergo an illegal foetal sex determination test in Panipat. The Police have arrested him following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father Sher Singh, a resident of Baluvala. Bablu has also been accused of attempting to electrocute his wife with the objective of killing her.

According to the victim’s family, Bablu had a love marriage with Seema in 2019, though it was later revealed that he had already been married twice before. One of his wives continues to live with his mother in Panipat. Seema, who already has two daughters, was eight months pregnant for the third time. The family alleges that Bablu, obsessed with having a son, compelled her to undergo foetal sex testing in Panipat. When the test revealed that the unborn child was a girl, Bablu’s behaviour turned violent.

The victim’s relatives claim that Bablu devised a plan to eliminate both his wife and the unborn child. They allege that he subjected Seema to inhuman torture, including beating her with wooden planks, kicking her in the stomach and even attempting to electrocute her by making her sit on a water tank. For two days she was continuously harassed and assaulted until a labourer working for Bablu informed her family. The relatives rushed to the spot and rescued Seema from his clutches.

The assault also resulted in death of the eight‑month‑old foetus. Seema was rushed to the Government Doon Medical College Hospital in Dehradun by her family, where the doctors performed an operation to remove the dead child. Fortunately, Seema survived and is currently undergoing treatment.

Sahaspur Kotwal Pradeep Rawat confirmed that after receiving the complaint, a case was registered under serious sections of law. A police team led by Sub‑Inspector Neeraj Tyagi arrested Bablu from his Jassowala residence on the night of 9 June. During interrogation, Bablu admitted that he had assaulted his wife on 6 June, striking her with a wooden plank, which resulted in the death of the unborn child.

While the family insists that Bablu carried out illegal foetal sex determination in Panipat, police have claimed that the medical reports do not yet substantiate this allegation. However, they have added stringent charges based on the assault and the death of the foetus. Bablu has been produced before court and has now been sent to jail.

Seema’s family has described Bablu as a habitual offender and has also claimed that he has a criminal history, having been jailed earlier. Bablu’s associates were seen loitering near their house at night, creating fear among the family. The relatives have demanded strict punishment, with Seema’s grandmother Kusum calling for the death penalty, and have sought police protection.

The authorities have reiterated that foetal sex determination is a punishable offence under Indian law, carrying three to five years of imprisonment along with fines for doctors, clinics and parents involved. The case has sparked outrage, highlighting both the menace of illegal sex determination practices and the brutal violence inflicted upon women in pursuit of a male child.
