Industries should come forward to formulate new standards: Tiwari

BIS organises Standards Conclave in Doon

Dehradun, 27 Dec: As part of the Foundation Day celebrations, the Dehradun branch of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organised a Standards Conclave at the IRDT Auditorium here today. The event aimed to promote active participation from industries in standardisation processes, discuss the future of standardisation, and raise awareness about worker safety and the digital tools offered by BIS.

The programme began with a tribute to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away last night, and two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to him. Later, addressing the gathering, Saurabh Tiwari, Head and Director of BIS Dehradun, emphasised the need for greater involvement of industries in creating new standards. He reminded that India has developed over 23,000 standards, but this number is significantly lower compared to many other countries. He stressed that Industries must take a proactive role in formulating and implementing new standards to drive progress. He further elaborated on the role of BIS through a detailed presentation and encouraged representatives from industries to inspire others to contribute to the standardisation process.

Harendra Garg, President of the SIDCUL Manufacturers’ Association Unit, stressed on the importance of adhering to industry regulations and adopting precautionary measures based on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). He commended the efforts of BIS in this regard and stated that the industries bear the responsibility of ensuring compliance with standards, which plays a crucial role in workplace safety and operational efficiency.

BIS Joint Director Sachin Chaudhary delivered a presentation under the Standard Manthan series, focusing on workers’ safety in the workplace. He reminded that the utility and accessibility of Indian Standards in ensuring a safe industrial environment.

Others who also participated included General Manager, District Industries Centre, Anjali Rawat Negi, Joint Director, MSME, Chanchal Bohra, Parth from CIPET, and BIS scientists Shyam Kumar, Saurabh Chaurasia, and Aditya Kumar.

The conclave also served as a platform for representatives from various industries to discuss labour issues, workplace safety, and the potential for improving standardisation efforts in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards reiterated its commitment to fostering collaboration with industries to enhance the quality and safety of products and services in the country.
