Workshop on human trafficking held at Police Lines

Dehradun, 26 Sep: A workshop on Awareness & Capacity Building on Anti Human Trafficking was held at the Police Lines here today. The workshop was jointly organised by National Commission for Women and the Uttarakhand Police. The objective of this workshop was to make all stakeholders aware about organised crimes like Human Trafficking and to increase Capacity Building among the stakeholders for the prevention of such serious crimes.

On their arrival at the venue, the guests were welcomed by DIO, Crime and Law & Order, P Renuka Devi.

Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women Kusum Kandwal stressed that safety of women is a very important issue.  She called upon the participants to go to the villages and organise workshops to make everyone aware about this heinous crime. Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Administration, Amit Sinha stressed that for effective prevention of human trafficking, immediate action should be taken on receiving information about missing persons, especially women and children, and all out efforts should be made to search for the missing. He also called upon the police officials to make every possible effort to search for the missing persons using the latest technology.

Member Secretary, National Commission for Women, Meenakshi Negi thanked the Uttarakhand Police for their cooperation in organising this workshop and said that to prevent human trafficking, it is necessary to know its root cause. There may be different reasons for human trafficking in every state and region. Human trafficking is mainly done for reasons such as sexual exploitation, domestic slavery, transplantation of human organs, forced labour, surrogacy, etc. To prevent this crime, all departments need to work in mutual coordination. Meenakshi Negi also spoke about gender sensitisation in detail.

Kamal Pant, ex-DG, SDRF, Civil Defence and Fire Force, Karnataka, also addressed the gathering on the subject of human trafficking. Programme Officer, MSS Seva Organisation, Mohammad Samoon, spoke about the role of NGOs in curbing cross border trafficking and in rescue and rehabilitation of trafficked women and children, in particular.

IG, Crime and Law & Order, Nilesh Anand Bharne, IG, Garhwal Range, KS Nagnyal, SSPS/SPs Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, GRP, Nodal Officer of Anti Human Trafficking Unit, ITBP, representatives from Child Welfare Committee, Women Empowerment and Child Development Department, Women Welfare Department, Labour Department, NGOs, State Railway Police and other police officials participated in the workshop along with about 200 other participants.
