Doon Nagar Nigam identifies 34 black spots for cleanliness drive

Dehradun, 26 Sep: Under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Pakhwada 2024’ launched by Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dehradun Municipal Corporation (Doon Nagar Nigam) is preparing an action plan. It has identified 34 black spots (cleanliness target unit) as the target of this fortnight where an intensive cleaning campaign is being carried out which will continue over the fortnight.

In addition, the Nagar Nigam has also taken an initiative towards ensuring that no garbage is dumped in these identified black spots. Instead, to keep these black spots clean and make them beautiful, flower pots and potted plants have been kept there. In addition, where possible, plantation is also being done. A Paryavaran Mitra of the Nagar Nigam has been deployed in each of these spots to monitor them. The Nagar Nigam administration has claimed the new arrangement is being appreciated by the Doon residents as well as by the media.

As part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign, apart from identification of the black spots and beautifying them, in all 46 awareness programmes are being organised by the Municipal Corporation.  So far, 26 awareness programmes have already been conducted, the detailed information of which has also been uploaded on the portal of the Government of India. Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has also shared that, in addition to the above mentioned initiatives, an intensive awareness campaign is also being run at various places in Dehradun with street plays, small rallies, and having dialogue with the public by taking public representatives along, by creating awareness jingles and installing banners, etc.

A comprehensive health camp was also held on 19 September at Nagar Nigam offices for the benefit of Paryavaran Mitras, sanitation supervisors and workers associated with the sewerage system, in which a large number of workers participated. In addition, a cleanliness campaign has also been organised in the sewage treatment plant and two Gau Sadans of the Municipal Corporation.

Chief Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Kumar is monitoring this special sanitation drive and, for this, he has also deployed 8 senior officers in the field. Assistant Municipal Commissioner and the nodal officer of the programme, SP Joshi shared that all these programmes will conclude by 1 October after ensuring significant improvement in the sanitation in the city. He also shared that on Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October, this campaign will be formally concluded at a function to be held in the Nagar Nigam premises.
