Dehradun 12 August: A seminar on ‘Uniform Civil Code‘ was organized today under the joint aegis of Law College Dehradun faculty of Uttaranchal University and Adhivakta Parishad, Dehradun.  Vikramjit Banerjee, Additional Solicitor General of India and Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, was present on the occasion as the Chief Guest and Justice Lokpal Singh, (Retd.) from the Uttarakhand High Court was the Guest of Honour. More than 300 participants including university students and advocates participated in the seminar.
The program was inaugurated by lighting the auspicious lamp and formally welcoming the guests by the Chancellor of the University, Jitendra Joshi.
In his welcome address, the Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean of Law College Dehradun, Prof. Rajesh Bahuguna said that we are currently on the threshold of judicial reform where not only the laws which have lost their utility over time, abolition of unnecessary laws and introduction of new laws according to the needs of the society, needs to be streamlined.
In his address, Justice (Retd) Lokpal Singh said that starting from the Constituent Assembly of India and in support of Articles 12, 14, 21, the implementation of Uniform Civil Code by the state of Uttarakhand is a good example, first to protect the rights of women. He gave priority to the rights of women over different religions, sects and personal laws.
The Chief Speaker of the program and the Additional Solicitor General of India said that even after 75 years of independence, the debate on Uniform Civil Code is shameful. We should not protect the rights of women just because it is given in the constitution, but protection of women’s rights is necessary for the creation of New India, there is no question of liking or disliking it. He further said that we should also take care of the five thousand years old customs and traditions so that the acceptance of Uniform Civil Code can be made amongst the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as well. Along with this, he also discussed some precautions and their solutions before implementing it.
