Dehradun, 1 May: The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) has announced long power cuts in many areas of Dehradun for the next 10 days. As per the information given by the UPCL, the power cuts up to 7 hours a day are likely to be enforced in at least 20 odd colonies of the Dehradun till 10 May. The power cuts come at a time when the UPCL has been priding itself on ensuring uninterrupted power supply in the state and the power tariffs have just been hiked at a time when the summer is peaking with the mercury rising every day.

According to the UPCL, the power cuts are being resorted to due to some maintenance work in Niranjanpur Sub Station. UPCL has declared shutdown in about 20 big colonies of this area till 10 May.  There a total of 11 feeders connected to Niranjanpur Sub Station.  The colonies and areas which will be most affected due to power cuts include Brahmanwala, Engineers’ Enclave, GMS Road, Majra, Gandhi Gram, Sabzi Mandi, Aradhana Garden, Industrial and Telephone Exchange Colony Umang Vihar, PPCL Colony, Indralok Colony, Lal Bahadur Shasti Marg, Patel Nagar Industrial Area and Patel Nagar residential area, Saharanpur Road and Haridwar Bypass area.

As per the information given, the power cuts will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. each day. The affected areas are among the most densely populated areas in the city. Power cuts will also directly hit the water supply in these areas as most of these areas get tubewell water and it is necessary for tubewells to get uninterrupted power supply for water supply.

During the period of power cuts, the supply may get fully or partially disrupted in the areas concerned till 10 May. The question that has been raised by the consumers is whether this maintenance work could not have been carried out before the advent of summer.
