Dehradun, 2 Sep: The National Annual Report and Index on Women Safety (NARI-2025) survey has come under question from the State Women’s Commission, which stated that Dehradun city is safe in every respect. Chairperson of the Women’s Commission, Kusum Kandwal has accused the report of tarnishing the state’s image.

In a statement issued today, Kandwal reminded that the National Annual Report and Index on Women Safety (NARI-2025) report was recently released in the country. She also reminded that the report claims to have surveyed cities across all states regarding women’s safety, in which Dehradun city of Uttarakhand was also included in the top ten list. It was stated that Dehradun is not safe for women. Kandwal has strongly dismissed the claims of the report and in her statement reminded that the report has come from a private organisation without conducting a deeper survey.

Kandwal asserted that such reports are tarnishing the image of the capital as well as Uttarakhand.

She claimed that Dehradun is a safe city for women in every respect. The report claiming Dehradun is unsafe for women is based on a small sample survey without using the official data. It has no connection with the government or the Women’s Commission.

Kandwal reminded that the National Annual Report and Index on Women Safety report is an initiative by a private company. It has no connection with the central government, the state government, or the National and State Women’s Commissions. She mentioned that National Women’s Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar was present at the event where the report was released, but this report or survey was not prepared by the commission. She informed that the report was prepared based on a survey of only 12,770 women across 31 cities. This small database itself indicates the superficial nature of the survey.

Kandwal said that all departments, including the police, are continuously making efforts to ensure safety for women. Due to the better law and order situation in the state, women can move anywhere in the state, including Dehradun, with a sense of security. She informed that the commission has sought information about the standards and methodology of the survey from the organisation that released the report.

She also stated that she spoke with National Women’s Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar over the phone. According to her, the National Women’s Commission has not conducted any such survey. Kandwal said that such surveys tarnish the state’s image, whereas the fact remains that not only tourists but also students from outside come here to study and spend time here in a safe manner.
